Edinburgh's closes often named after the trades and businesses based there, Fleshmarket Close was a butcher's meat market. The hung meat would be on display all down the steep close. the blood would drip down the steep incline of the to drain naturally down into the 'Nor Loch', a man made stretch of water.
This close leads to Market Street and was cut through by Cockburn Street when it was built in 1855-60.
