Lady Stair's Close, Royal Mile, Edinburgh

Lady Stair's Close, Royal Mile, Edinburgh

Mixed media and pastels on archival paper, high-quality print.

The four-hundred-year-old Lady Stair's Close is possibly the most well-known of the Royal Mile's closes. It is a dark little alley with slabs filled with famous quotes that lead you to one of the most beautiful buildings in the city.

Lady Stairs Close provided the main entry into the Old Town from the north in the 18th century from the Mound and what became Princes Street. This townhouse is now the Writers' Museum, which commemorates the famous Scottish authors Robert Burns, Walter Scott, and Robert Louis Stevenson. The poet Robert Burns (1759 - 96) once lived on the east side of the Close.
