Old Calton Burial Ground from Calton Hill, after Breughel

Old Calton Burial Ground from Calton Hill, after Breughel

Mixed media and pastels on archival paper

This dramatic snow scene, with Old Calton Burial Ground set against the backdrop of the Salisbury Crags, is linked to Pieter Brueghel (1525–1530) and his ‘The Hunters in the Snow’ (1565). Therein, hunters in the early morning come across their village, and one can almost feel the crisp, frozen atmosphere created by this master of naturalistic painting.

In Mr.J's rendition, he has endeavoured to capture the style and technique of Breughel, whilst conjuring a unique atmosphere against the iconic silhouettes of Edinburgh.
